The following interview was conducted by ShadowMan Entertainment with Bill Johnson, boyfriend of Sabrina Dietrich, victim #2.
SM: Bill, when did you first start dating Sabrina?
Bill: Well, Sabrina and I met on the bluffs about three months
before she was found up there. I mean, it's weird to thinkabout it, but she was found almost in the same exact spot where we met.
SM: You mean you were hiking up there?
Bill: Yeah (laughing), sure. Nah, I was just up there hanging
out with some friends, and Sabrina came walking through with this friend of hers. We just started flirting with the ladies, and they stuck around. I liked Sabrina. She seemed, yeah, what's the
word...worldly.
SM: So you went out with her shortly after this meeting?
Bill: Oh, yeah. The next night. I got her number and called her later that night. She was funny. Always giggling. She was hot to get out and play, for sure.
SM: And by this, you mean...?
Bill: Well, I don't think
she really wanted to live at home. Hell, I don't think she even wanted to be in Monarch Beach. She thought the place was sort of seedy and wanted to see the world. Eh, but she didn't talk about it much, and
I didn't press her.
SM: Do you remember the girl she was with that day on the bluffs?
Bill: Kind of hard to forget. That girl had some gorgeous hair, man. Red. Long. Thick. Made me want to run my fingers through it.
SM: So why didn't you ask her out instead of Sabrina?
Bill: Ah, man. All you had to do is look at the set of her jaw. Her lips were thin and her eyes were like ice. The hair was a balance, you know? If you looked at the hair, you wouldn't notice the crazy.
SM: Did you get her name?
Bill: Shit, I may have. I just don't remember. If you think it was Ally, I don't think it was. I mean, I don't remember her name as being 'Ally'. That's an unusual name. And once I got a look at her, I
just didn't pay any attention anymore. Sabrina was in my mind's eye. That girl looked fine.
SM: So how serious did you and Sabrina get?
Bill: Serious? I don't think we ever got serious. She was thinking about getting away with some captain at some
point. You know, just crewing on his boat.
SM: Uh, Bill? From what we understand from the captain of
this boat, he didn't think you knew anything about this. What's the scoop?
Bill: (laughing) Nothing gets by me! Hell,
I knew Sabrina was working for him on and off. And I knew he had this thing for her, too. She didn't even know it, I don't think. No, I know she didn't know the captain was hot for her. She was really
worldly on the outside, but she was so naive, get it?
SM: You mean she didn't know that the captain was trying to get her to go off with
him?
Bill: Right! She thought she was really good at crewing. Hell, she may have been good, I don't know. She was into
sports. Great shape. The point is that the captain could've had his pick of crew. That's a fine boat he's got. And I think she learned a lot working for him. I was kind of grateful. He kept her from running
the streets with that red-haired friend of hers.
SM: So this woman and Sabrina were good friends?
Bill: I don't know. Sabrina never mentioned her, and I didn't ask. I just would see Sabrina hanging around with her at the
mall, down at the beach. Sometimes she would be with Sabrina when I picked Sabrina up for a date, but she would never say hey or anything. Nah, I just never asked.
SM: We also hear from several witnesses that Sabrina mentioned that you both were talking marriage. What about that?
Bill: Yeah. Well. Sabrina kept bringing that up. But I don't want to get married. I never want to get married. I felt that
Sabrina wanted to get married to just get out of the house. Hell, I'm still living at home. And I don't want to leave just yet, you know? I like my life just fine right now, and Sabrina was itching. Just
itching. I couldn't scratch. No - I wouldn't scratch. I wasn't about to play that game.
SM: Bill, where were you the night before
Sabrina's body was found?
Bill: I was at home. Watching TV and watching my dad get drunk. That's it. My mom was
already passed out. What can I say. Two drunk folks, and I know that the court's going to tear me a new, well, they're going to eat me alive on this one. Hell, my folks won't even be able to vouch for me.
I'm not going to lie about this. How can I lie about my parents? I'm going to make this easy and just let it out. Maybe it'll be ok. But my folks were zoned half the night. I could've gone out and robbed the
bloody bank, and they wouldn't know. So, yeah. I guess I could be a suspect, but it seems the coppers don't want to take me seriously. Don't get me wrong - that's alright, you bet. But I don't get it. I
guess they have someone else in mind.
SM: Did you have any phone calls that night? Make any calls?
Bill: No. Nothing. Nothing. I'm telling you, there's nothing that would hold up in court. At least from my point of view. The next morning when they found
her, I was passed out myself. I mean, I was still asleep. Didn't go to sleep until about 3:30 and woke up at about noon. My folks were up before me, but they were gone.
SM: Gone?
Bill: Yeah. Saturday. Mom goes shopping, dad goes golfing.Gone.
SM: When did you first hear about Sabrina?
Bill: You mean when did I know it was her that they found?
SM: Yes. When did you realize that...
Bill: I found out on Monday morning.
SM: How?
Bill: A friend had seen it on the police blotter on the OCS web site and followed up on it. He drove up to the bluffs shortly after the cops left and asked
this chickie that was standing there what had happened. She said that the body of a woman was found, naked, and it looked like she had, uhm..she...
SM: We'll give it a minute, Bill, ok?
Bill: No, I can do this. She, I mean this girl, told my friend that the woman's name was Sabrina. Yeah. Well. How many Sabrinas do we know. Great name for a witch, but there aren't any witches around here
that I know of. That was my Sabrina.
SM: Bill, this seems to be hitting you hard for you saying that you two weren't that deep, you know?
Bill: hell, man. We were friends. I really liked her. I trusted her. She wanted more than I could give her, but I
knew this. Iprobably knew more about her than she did. I really loved her, but it wasn't for right now, you know? I could see in a couple of years, if we ever lasted that long. But the important thing was
the friendship. How many friends you got? Huh? It's important. Real big. eh, shit. Yeah. So my friend calls me on Monday after he gets more scoop. He wanted to make sure it was her before he dumped this on
me. Wanted to make real sure.
SM: So what happened then?
Bill: What happened? I called the Sheriff's office. I wanted to know what was going on. I would've gone down there, but I
have this thing about hanging out at the copper's. You know what they said?
SM: What did they say, Bill?
Bill: They said, get this, they said that they would get back with me. That's it. I told them everything I told you, and they
said they'd get back with me. It was unreal. Like being in a dream. Unreal.
SM: So is this why you wanted to speak with us?
Bill: Sure. I want it on record somewhere that I loved her. And that I didn't do it. And that I hope they get the bastard who
messed with her and who messed with our lives. That's it. |
