WITNESS: Charity Blair
ADDRESS: Asheville, North Carolina
STATEMENT:
Gosh, John and I were just walking along this old trail here and talking about how gorgeous everything was
around here. I was just listening and looking down at the ground. I look for mushrooms all the time. I thought I saw something peculiar and I went off the path just to make sure I wasn't nuts. I didn't think
I would find an Amenita Muscaria here on the bluff. To find one of those here would be incredible!
Oh, I'm sorry, I forget how excited I can be about mushrooms. No one else really cares. Well, it wasn't an
Amenita, it was part of a pair of underwear! I swear. And John, he's just still talking up a storm in back of me.
I just sort of nudged the panties with my foot and then I saw something else under the
bushes over there. So I went to check that out, and there she was. She didn't smell, so I don't think she's been dead that long. And it didn't look as though any animals have been at the remains, so it may
be that the body was just, well, fresh.
Oh, I didn't touch it. No, lordy, I could tell she already had rigor mortis or some such thing. I mean she's sort of purple.
I got John to hush up just long enough
to come see what I'd found, and he just really clammed up then. Ha! He was, well, he was dead quiet.
[Note: witness was laughing hysterically and statement was interrupted briefly in order for the witness
to calm down]
Oh, where was I? Oh, I just got the cellphone out of John's backpack and dialed 911. The police are really efficient here. I don't believe it was more than five minutes before they got here.
Lordy. But it's been five hours since then. When do you think John and I can leave?
